I was born in Poland and in the early 2000s I emigrated to the United Kingdom. Today my connection to the country is complex: I return regularly, yet I feel increasingly distant from the reality of contemporary Poland. Each time I visit my hometown, I photograph my friends, their families, and still lives which surround them. I move freely between portraits and objects which coexist within the project and are forming visual connections between people and their environments. These photographs are pockets of memory, fragments of my childhood and adolescence, existing somewhere between past and present. Because of the distance created by emigration I am here leaving objective reality behind, and I am entering the uncertain territory of subjective memory of the country I once knew, through colour and light. The people in the photographs merge with their surroundings, reflecting a sense of belonging to place while also revealing the distance created by time. Note on the title The title brings together two literary references about Poland. Don’t ask about Poland quotes a song by Grzegorz Ciechowski, “Nie pytaj o Polskę” (“Don’t ask about Poland”), expressing the difficulty of speaking about the country. He answered : “Why?” “Your photograph will not represent who I am. This is not how I want to live, this is a temporary situation”. He took his phone out and showed me photos from back home, with his family. “This is who I am, this is me”. So instead, we went for a walk and a coffee. After time spent together and talking about my photography work, he let me take his portrait but only if I promised that the photographs would not show his face. This is a story where Calais the town meets Calais the camp. While the self-built camp existed, they co-existed and blended in one another – while being wholly separated. Living under the constant presence of cameras pointing at them, people living in the camp put on a sign saying “No photos, no tourists”. As an immigrant with family and friends scattered around the world, this uncertain climate and the sudden closing of borders made feelings of distance and nostalgia greater than they already were. I interrogated my body of work and scanned through the many places and people I have visited and photographed so far. By transporting myself in there, through my process of image making, I might have found a novel way to travel, with my hands and memories. Published in Period. Zine “Lost” Issue “Whenever I set off on any sort of journey I fall off the radar. No one knows where I am. At the point I departed from? Or at the point I’m headed to? Can there be an in-between? Am I like that lost day when you fly east, and that regained night that comes from going west? Am I subject to that much-lauded law of quantum physics that states that a particle may exist in two places at once? Or to a different law that hasn’t been demonstrated and that we haven’t even thought of yet that says that you can doubly not exist in the same place? I think there are a lot of people like me.Who aren’t around, who’ve disappeared. They show up all of a sudden in the arrivals terminal and start to exist when the immigrations officers stamp their passport, or when the polite receptionist at whatever hotel hands over their key. By now they must have become aware of their own instability and dependence upon places, times of day, on language or on a city and its atmosphere. Not only did Zuzanna model in the shoot, but she also partly styled herself and did her own makeup. She is also the author of the photographs of her house and its surroundings. Coupled with snippets of correspondence between me and her, the series aimed at exploring the world of a young girl and letting her vision drive the process forward.
